New Delhi: The United States has launched a new round of airstrikes inside Iran, ending a brief pause in direct military action after an alleged Iranian missile attack on a US military base in Jordan.

The operation marks Washington's first strikes on Iranian territory since President Donald Trump suspended a 13-day bombing campaign last week to leave room for diplomatic efforts.

US Confirms Military Response

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were carried out as a direct response to what it described as an attempted Iranian missile attack on American forces stationed in Jordan. According to the US military, multiple ballistic missiles were launched by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), but all were successfully intercepted and no casualties were reported.

President Trump had hinted at military action earlier in the day, saying the United States would respond "very hard" if Iran continued its attacks. He also claimed Iran had privately indicated that the missile launch was a mistake, though Tehran has not publicly confirmed that assertion.

Explosions Reported Across Southern Iran

Iranian media reported explosions in several southern locations, including Qeshm Island. Officials in Hormozgan Province said areas near the island were struck in the early hours of Wednesday. Reports also indicated that locations in Abadan, Shadegan and Arvandkenar in Khuzestan Province were targeted during the operation.

Diplomatic Efforts Face Fresh Setback

The latest military exchange has disrupted recent attempts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran. The airstrikes came just days after the US paused its bombing campaign in the hope of reviving diplomatic talks.

US officials have since indicated that active negotiations are not currently underway. Meanwhile, CENTCOM warned that continued attacks by Iran-backed groups on US personnel and military facilities in the Middle East could prompt additional military action, signalling that tensions in the region remain high.
