Kathmandu: Nepal is facing one of its worst natural disasters in recent years as the death toll from devastating flash floods has climbed to 962, while nearly 4,000 people remain missing.
The scale of destruction became more horrifying after rescuers recovered 23 bodies from a single house in Betrawati, Nuwakot district, highlighting the devastating impact of the floods that swept through several parts of Nepal.
The disaster began on August 26 after a massive collapse of ice and rocks near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered flash floods. The powerful waters surged through the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river system, destroying homes, roads, bridges and several hydropower projects.
Thousands of families have been affected as rescue teams continue searching through mud, debris and damaged areas for survivors.
Authorities said 3,925 people are still unaccounted for, while rescue operations remain extremely challenging due to blocked roads, heavy mud and bad weather.
More than 900 workers are feared trapped inside hydropower tunnels in flood-hit districts including Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Rescue teams are using excavators, searchlights and controlled blasts to clear the blocked tunnels.
The discovery in Nuwakot has shocked the country. Rescue workers found 23 bodies from one house, showing the deadly force of the floodwaters that swept through residential areas.
In many locations, families are still searching hospitals and identification centres for missing relatives. Authorities are using DNA testing, photographs and personal belongings to identify recovered bodies.
Nepal has requested specialised equipment, including DNA kits, drones, LiDAR technology, freezers and bridge units, from countries including India, China, Singapore and South Korea.
The United Nations has warned that around 65,000 people urgently need water, sanitation and hygiene support. Thousands of children have also been affected, with many requiring protection services and psychological support.
In neighbouring India, 13 bodies were recovered from the Gandak river in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, including six women and seven men. Preparations are underway to hand over the bodies to Nepal after identification procedures.
Authorities fear that the death toll could rise further as rescue teams reach more remote areas. With thousands still missing and entire communities damaged, Nepal continues its massive search and relief operation amid fears of further rainfall and landslides.
