Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected US President Donald Trump’s proposed 15-point peace plan for Gaza, saying Israel will not withdraw its forces until Hamas is completely and genuinely disarmed. Netanyahu made the statement during a cabinet meeting on Sunday, making it clear that Israel does not accept any plan that allows Hamas to keep its weapons.
“Israel rejects the 15-point document,” Netanyahu said. He added that the Israeli military would continue operations to protect its soldiers and citizens until the threat from Hamas is removed.
Israel demands complete disarmament of Hamas
The disagreement comes after Trump’s Board of Peace announced last month that an agreement had been reached for the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups operating in Gaza.
However, Hamas has said it will only consider giving up heavy weapons if Israel first stops all military actions and withdraws its forces from Gaza. This has created a major roadblock in efforts to move forward with the peace plan.
Netanyahu says withdrawal cannot happen without action from Hamas
Netanyahu said Israel cannot accept what he called “fake disarmament” and insisted that Hamas must take real steps before any Israeli troop withdrawal. He said Israeli officials are continuing talks with US representatives about the next steps.
“There are ideas being discussed. Some are acceptable to us, while some are not,” Netanyahu said, adding that Israel would continue to protect its interests.
Trump’s Gaza peace plan faces new challenges
Trump had earlier described the Gaza roadmap as a major step toward achieving long-term peace and security in the region. The plan included several key points, including the disarmament of Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, reconstruction efforts and the creation of a Board of Peace to oversee the implementation process. However, Netanyahu’s latest rejection has created fresh doubts over whether the plan can move ahead.
Political pressure on Netanyahu grows
The Israeli prime minister is also facing pressure from his right-wing allies, especially as the country moves closer to elections. Some far-right leaders have opposed the Gaza proposal and demanded a new cabinet discussion on the issue. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has also criticised the draft agreement, calling it unacceptable. With both Israel and Hamas refusing to change their main positions, the future of Trump’s Gaza peace plan remains uncertain.
