North Korea fires ballistic missiles again (Img: Internet)
New Delhi: Amid escalating global tensions, North Korea on Saturday fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles into the sea from its eastern coastal region near Sinpo. According to South Korean military, the missiles travelled approximately 140 kilometres before landing in waters off the Korean Peninsula.
The launches come at a time when geopolitical tensions are already high due to ongoing friction between Iran and United States, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Following the missile launches, Japan activated a national emergency alert system. The country’s Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the alert was issued as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, South Korea convened an urgent meeting of its National Security Council. Officials strongly condemned the launches and called for an immediate halt to such provocations, warning that repeated tests threaten regional stability.
Military analysts are now examining whether the missiles were launched from land-based systems or submarines. A submarine-based launch would signal a significant upgrade in North Korea’s strike capabilities, as such systems are harder to detect and intercept.
South Korea stated that it is closely coordinating with the United States and Japan to monitor developments and maintain readiness against potential threats.
Under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, North Korea has accelerated its weapons development programme. The country has recently showcased advanced missile technologies and hinted at developing a nuclear-powered submarine, reflecting its growing military ambitions.
Experts believe these developments are part of a broader strategy to strengthen deterrence and increase leverage in future negotiations.
Despite repeated warnings from international bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency, North Korea continues to conduct missile tests. Concerns remain high over its advancing nuclear capabilities.
Relations between North Korea and the United States have remained strained since diplomatic talks between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un collapsed in 2019. While occasional signals of dialogue have emerged, key disagreements over denuclearisation remain unresolved.
This latest launch follows a series of similar tests earlier this month, indicating a continued pattern of military escalation in the region.
