New Delhi: Unrest has intensified in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) amid continuing anti-government protests across the region.
According to reports, more than 30 people were killed after security forces allegedly opened fire on protesters, while hundreds of others were reportedly injured. Internet services have also been disrupted in the region following the escalation in tensions.
Neither the casualties nor the accusations made against the security forces during their operation have been independently verified.
The protests are said to be led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). The protest groups have made complaints regarding the lack of political representation as well as economic problems such as high prices and administrative discrimination.
As per the protest organisers, the movement is focused on political reservations and democratic rights.
Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif referred to the demonstrators as "enemies" and refused to hold any talks, saying there will never be any discussion with those who challenge the state.
Similar comments were made by Special Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah, defending the actions of the government and stating that force will be used against those challenging the authority of the state.
The Indian government stated that the current chaos is a result of the long-standing problems of poor governance, economic problems, and the lack of rights in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Furthermore, India's Ministry of External Affairs has criticised the process of the local elections in the area, saying that it does not solve the problem of governance and human rights. Previously, the rights of people in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have been discussed at the international level, including at the UN General Assembly.
The president of the National Conference, Farooq Abdullah, was also worried about the developments and requested the attention of the international community regarding this issue. He requested an objective assessment of the situation prevailing in that area and appealed to the Indian government to bring up the issue diplomatically.

The situation in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir is still volatile with continuing internet blockage and ongoing security operations in the region.
