New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s role in the emerging Gaza peace framework, hours after Hamas accepted parts of Trump's 20-point peace plan.

PM Modi described the development as a “significant step forward” and emphasized India’s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a just and durable peace in the region.

Notable step forward, says Modi

PM Modi described the development as a notable advancement toward peace.

"We welcome President Trump's leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward. India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace," PM Modi said in a post on X.

Earlier this week, Pm Modi had backed Trump's Gaza peace plan, saying it provides a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace for both Palestinian and Israeli people.

US Backed peace plan

The agreement follows a US backed peace plan, which includes provisions for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the safe release of hostages. Reports indicate that all hostages, including foreign nationals and civilians affected by the conflict, are expected to be freed in the coming days.

This development has been welcomed internationally as a rare moment of hope in a region long marked by tension and violence.

Israeli PM expressed cautious optimism

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed cautious optimism, noting that Israel is ready to halt offensive operations if Hamas complies with the terms of the agreement. Netanyahu highlighted that the release of hostages and reduction in hostilities could open the door for broader negotiations between the two sides.

While the announcement is a positive development, observers have pointed out that Hamas’s long-term commitment to disarmament and regional stability remains uncertain.

Efforts towards mending ties

Earlier this year, President Trump had imposed a 50% tariff on Indian exports, citing trade imbalances and India’s continued purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict. Indian officials had criticised the move, calling it “unfair” and “unjustified.”

However, recent interactions indicate a favourable in bilateral relations. In September 2025, Trump personally called PM Modi late night to wish him a happy 75th birthday. Modi acknowledged the gesture publicly, expressing gratitude and reaffirming his commitment to strengthening the India-US partnership.

Further signs of improving ties came in early October 2025, when Trump shared a post from Prime Minister Modi on Truth Social, highlighting Modi’s endorsement of Trump’s Gaza peace plan as a credible path toward long-term stability.

These gestures suggest both leaders are actively working to rebuild trust and cooperation between their countries.
