Moscow: In a significant diplomatic statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "wise leader" during his address at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi. Putin emphasized that Modi prioritizes India's national interests, underscoring the strong  partnership between Russia and India.

The remarks come after US President Donald Trump recently imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian imports, partly in response to India’s ongoing oil trade with Russia.

Putin highlighted the fact that India would continue to make decisions in its national interest, underscoring the resilience of the India-Russia partnership. Amid ongoing trade negotiations between India and the US, Putin expressed faith that PM Modi would never bow down to the tariff pressure.

Putin asserted that India would not succumb to external pressures that compromise its sovereignty.

He stated, "The people of a country like India will closely monitor the decisions made by the political leadership and will never allow any humiliation in front of anyone." He further noted that Prime Minister Modi would not take actions that undermine India's dignity.

The Russian leader referred PM Modi as his friend

He referred to PM Modi as his friend, noting that he feels comfortable in their trustworthy interactions. "We have never had any problems or interstate tensions with India. Never," the Russian leader noted.

Putin highlighted the "special" nature of Russia-India relations since the days of the Soviet Union, when India was fighting for its independence. "In India, they remember this, they know it, and they value it. We appreciate that India has not forgotten it," he declared.

Highlighting the economic implications, Putin pointed out that halting oil imports from Russia could result in estimated losses of $9–10 billion for India. However, he suggested that maintaining these imports could mitigate such losses and bolster India's standing as a sovereign nation.

Putin also acknowledged the trade imbalance between the two nations and announced measures to address it. He revealed plans for Russia to increase imports of agricultural products and pharmaceuticals from India, aiming to balance the trade relationship.

Putin lauded India's government led by PM Modi, calling him a "balanced, wise", and "nationally oriented" leader.
