New Delhi: China is steadily expanding its military presence across the world and challenging the authority of the US. Beijing is getting bolder in projecting its power in the Pacific, from Taiwan to Australia and from Africa to Latin America.
China’s large-scale drill in December 2025, encircling Taiwan with naval ships, jet fighters, and coast guard vessels, firing rockets into the Taiwan Strait, warned the US to stay away. The military drills held around Taiwan were the largest ever in terms of geographical area.

China named this military exercise “Justice Mission 2025” and declared the drills were “successfully completed.” Chinese President Xi Jinping’s dream of reunification of Taiwan with China seems unstoppable.
Xi, in his speech, hailed the blockade of the island drill as “Taiwan Recovery Day.” Chinese officials also issued a “stern warning” against “separatists” and “external interference” to stay away from the Taiwan Strait.

Over the years, Chinese shipbuilding capacity has grown 200 times compared to the United States. China has 234 warships as compared to the US Navy's 219. Emboldened with naval power, the Chinese President has pledged to achieve the “reunification” of China and Taiwan.
China considers Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and wants to bring it under its control using military might if necessary.
The international community is concerned about China’s expansionary ambitions and has expressed solidarity with Taiwan. Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te, in his New Year’s Day speech, said that he will defend national sovereignty and establish a robust national defense system to protect the nation.
China’s adventurism in Taiwan could trigger a wider war involving the US and the West. Washington has urged Asia and Australia to increase defense spending to check China’s growing influence.
