Dhaka: An Indian woman died at a hospital in Dhaka after an air ambulance carrying her from Agartala to Kolkata made an emergency landing in Bangladesh on Sunday following a technical malfunction that caused the aircraft’s door to partially open mid-air, according to local media reports.

The Beechcraft King Air C90A, registered as VT-HYA, was flying at an altitude of around 12,000 feet when the problem occurred. The aircraft subsequently landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at approximately 1:40 pm local time.

Mid-Air Malfunction Forces Emergency Landing

According to the state-owned BSS news agency, seven people were aboard the aircraft, including two pilots, the patient, a doctor, a paramedic and two companions. All other occupants were reported to be safe following the emergency landing.

The patient, identified as 56-year-old Anjana Bhowmik, was taken to Kurmitola Multicare Specialised Hospital in Dhaka. Doctors declared her dead, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Cause of Patient’s Death Remains Unclear

The circumstances surrounding Bhowmik’s death have not been established. It remains unclear whether the fatality was connected to the aircraft’s technical malfunction or resulted from an underlying medical condition.

Md Riaz Uddin, spokesperson for the executive director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, told The Daily Star that the aircraft developed a mechanical problem during the flight, causing its door to open.

Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamrul Hasan Talukder told the newspaper that Bhowmik died at the hospital at 4:40 pm local time on Sunday.

Bangladesh Assists Despite Clearance Issues

Bangladeshi authorities allowed the aircraft to land on humanitarian grounds despite the absence of the required clearance for an international landing, BSS reported.

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka coordinated with Bangladeshi officials to complete the necessary diplomatic formalities, according to the agency.

The aircraft, operated by India’s SKB Infracon Pvt Ltd, remained at Dhaka airport as authorities worked to resolve the clearance-related issues, The Daily Star reported.
