Tel Aviv: Israel President Isaac Herzog has written to Captain Smit Machchhar, praising his courage in safely steering a Flydubai aircraft on September 30, 2026, and inviting him to Jerusalem after he recovers from his injuries. Herzog has also promised to present the Indian pilot with Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism.

In his letter, Herzog conveyed Israel’s deep gratitude to Machchhar for his determination in preventing a potential catastrophe for the passengers aboard the flight.

Herzog praised Machchhar for keeping his composure in the face of grave danger and making sound decisions despite being in pain.

“Your ability to find the strength to rise above the pain, to combat the immediate threat to your life, and to operate sound judgment demonstrates the strength of your character and the great valor you possess,” Herzog wrote.

Herzog also connected Machchhar’s actions with the historic ties between India and Israel, recalling the Indian troops who fought in the Holy Land more than a century ago.

“Your heroics place you in the distinguished ranks of Indian troops, who risked their lives over 100 years ago to liberate cities in the Holy Land, forever becoming a part of Israel’s history,” the President wrote.

He said Machchhar, too, would become a cherished part of Israel’s history, further strengthening the close relationship between the two countries.

“You too, Captain Machchhar, will henceforth be a treasured part of our people’s history, further amplifying the warmth and connection between the Republic of India and the State of Israel,” Herzog said.

Towards the end of his letter, Herzog noted that Machchhar was recovering in the United Arab Emirates, which he described as a close friend and partner.

“As you slowly begin your journey towards healing, I know that you are in the very best hands of our dear friends and partners in the United Arab Emirates,” he wrote.

Wishing the captain a full recovery, Herzog said he hoped to welcome him to Jerusalem once he had regained his strength.

“We all share heartfelt prayers for your full and speedy recovery, and I look forward, once you have regained strength, to welcoming you to Jerusalem and expressing the appreciation and the love of our grateful nation,” he said.

Herzog reiterated that it would be an honour to present Machchhar with the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism on behalf of the Israeli people once he had recovered.
