Washington: US President Donald Trump has said that he would “soon” declare the strategic Strait of Hormuz as a territory of the United States, escalating tensions with Iran amid an ongoing military standoff in the region.
Speaking at a political rally in New York, Trump claimed that the US would defeat Iran and said Washington would take control of the crucial waterway after the conflict ends.
Trump said the United States had “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz and suggested that Washington would maintain its position.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, with a significant share of global oil and natural gas shipments passing through it. Any disruption in the waterway can have a major impact on global energy markets.
Iran strongly criticised Trump’s remarks, saying the Strait of Hormuz cannot be taken over through statements or military pressure.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the strategic waterway “cannot be seized by tweet” or through military force. He asserted that Iran would not bow to threats and maintained that the strait has historically belonged to Iran.
The dispute comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following military actions and restrictions around the waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz has remained largely closed amid the conflict, affecting international shipping and raising concerns over energy supplies. Several countries have closely monitored developments due to the waterway’s importance for global trade.
The ongoing standoff has contributed to concerns over rising crude oil prices and the possibility of a wider regional conflict.
While commercial shipping has continued under strict security conditions, the situation remains highly sensitive as the US and Iran remain locked in a confrontation over control and access to the strategic maritime route.
