Islamabad: Police have once again been targeted in Pakistan. A bomb blast in Tank district of the country's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province killed 7 policemen. The attack targeted an armored police vehicle.
The attack occurred on Monday, but the Tehreek-e-Taliban has now claimed responsibility. The incident comes at a time when Pakistan is facing increased terrorist activity.
According to police, the remote-controlled bomb detonated near the police vehicle. Five policemen were killed on the spot, while two others died while undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Tank district's deputy police chief, Parvez Shah, said the explosion was so powerful that the armored vehicle was severely damaged.
TTP claimed responsibility for the attack
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a volatile region of Pakistan, where terrorist violence has resurfaced in recent months. Most of the attacks are carried out by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, and the military is the target.
The killed policemen were identified as Gomal Bazaar Police Station SHO Ishaq Ahmed Khan, Additional SHO Sher Aslam, driver Abdul Majeed, and Elite Force personnel Arshad Ali, Shaukat Ali, Hazrat Ali, and Ehsanullah.
The Pakistani government alleges that TTP terrorists take refuge in Afghanistan and plan attacks in Pakistan from there. However, the Afghan Taliban has rejected these allegations, stating that Pakistan's security situation is its internal problem.
On Tuesday, just 24 hours after the IED attack on a police vehicle, indiscriminate firing took place in Bannu, killing four people. According to local media, the victims were members of a jirga (a local council that resolves disputes).
Police said a search operation has been launched in the area to apprehend the attackers and ensure the safety of local residents. A similar incident of violence against jirga members occurred last year.
On November 21, seven people were shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Hoved area of Bannu.
In a press conference on January 6, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, stated that law enforcement agencies conducted 75,175 intelligence-based operations across the country in 2025, of which 14,658 were conducted in KP alone, 58,778 in Balochistan, and 1,739 in the rest of the country.
He described all these attacks as the work of terrorists and claimed that Afghan militants were behind them. However, Afghanistan has maintained that this is an internal matter of Pakistan in which it has no role.
