Tulsi Gabbard resigns sparks debate over Trump cabinet stability
Washington: Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation as the US Director of National Intelligence (DNI), citing her husband Abraham Williams’ battle with a rare form of bone cancer. Her resignation from President Donald Trump’s administration will take effect on June 30.
In a heartfelt resignation letter shared on X, Gabbard said she could not continue in such a demanding role while her husband undergoes treatment. Trump acknowledged her decision and praised her work, announcing that Principal Deputy Director Aaron Lukas would serve as Acting DNI until a replacement is appointed.
Reports of Internal Rift in the White House
Although Gabbard publicly attributed her exit to family reasons, several US media reports suggest her relationship with the White House had become increasingly strained in recent months. Reuters reported that some officials within the administration were dissatisfied with her performance and had allegedly pushed for her resignation. However, the White House denied claims that she was forced out.
Differences reportedly emerged between Trump and Gabbard over key foreign policy issues, particularly Iran’s nuclear program. Gabbard had stated that Iran was not actively developing nuclear weapons - a position Trump publicly contradicted.
Kept Away From Key Security Discussions
According to reports, Gabbard was excluded from several major national security meetings involving Iran and Venezuela. Her anti-war stance and criticism of US military interventions abroad often placed her at odds with hardline voices inside the administration.
Her tenure also drew attention due to controversial initiatives, including efforts to declassify files linked to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the origins of COVID-19, and voting machine security investigations. Reports claim these projects frustrated senior White House officials.
Fourth Woman to Exit Trump Cabinet This Year
Gabbard has now become the fourth female Cabinet-level official to leave the Trump administration in 2026, intensifying political discussion over instability within the administration and the shrinking presence of women in senior leadership positions.
