Washington: A US federal judge has blocked the Trump administration’s plan to relocate the FBI headquarters to a federal office building in Washington, delivering a setback to the proposed move.
The judge ruled that the administration had unlawfully cancelled a previously approved plan to construct a new FBI headquarters facility in Maryland.
The decision marks a new development in the years-long dispute over the future location of the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the country’s top law enforcement agency.
During former President Joe Biden’s administration, a site in Greenbelt, Maryland, was selected for the construction of a new FBI headquarters. However, the Trump administration later attempted to reverse that decision and proposed repurposing the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, located near the FBI’s current headquarters.
US District Judge Theodore D. Chuang, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, ruled that the relocation decision did not comply with legal requirements.
The court has barred the Trump administration from moving the FBI headquarters to the Reagan Building, keeping the earlier Maryland site selection at the centre of the ongoing dispute.
The ruling adds another legal hurdle to the administration’s efforts to change the location of one of America’s most important federal agencies.
