Washington:  The United States national debt has crossed the $40 trillion mark for the first time, highlighting growing concerns over the country’s financial position. The increase has been linked to rising defence expenditure, major social security programmes and higher interest payments on government borrowing.

The debt reached the new milestone just months after crossing the $39 trillion mark, reflecting the rapid pace of federal borrowing and increasing pressure on Washington to manage its finances.

Fourth Record High During Trump’s Second Term

Since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, US national debt has increased by nearly $4 trillion. During this period, the debt crossed record levels four times.

The national debt rose from around $36.2 trillion at the beginning of Trump’s second term to over $40 trillion in August 2026. It crossed $37 trillion in August 2025, $38 trillion in October 2025, $39 trillion in March 2026 and finally surpassed $40 trillion in August 2026.

Rising Borrowing Costs Impact Americans

Economists have warned that increasing national debt could have a direct impact on ordinary Americans. Higher government borrowing can lead to increased interest rates, affecting mortgages, vehicle loans and business investments.

Experts also caution that growing debt-related expenses may push up the cost of goods and services while limiting future government spending capacity.

Washington Faces Fiscal Challenge

The Trump administration has said it is working to reduce wasteful spending and improve economic growth. However, fiscal experts believe the US must take stronger measures to control long-term borrowing.

The country’s debt situation remains a major challenge as lawmakers face decisions on spending priorities, debt limits and economic stability in the coming years.
