Tehran: US President Donald Trump announced that American forces have begun what he described as a “massive and ongoing” military operation targeting Iran. The announcement came hours after explosions shook Tehran, where Israeli strikes reportedly hit areas near the office of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In a video message, Trump said the operation aims to neutralise threats posed by Iran’s missile capabilities and to prevent the country from endangering US national security interests. He stated that Washington intends to dismantle Iran’s missile infrastructure and curb its ability to rebuild military capabilities.

Israeli Strike Sparks Escalation

Earlier in the day, Israel carried out a daylight attack in Tehran that sent plumes of smoke rising over the city’s central district. Iranian media reported that multiple locations across the country were targeted.

According to officials familiar with the operation, the strikes focused on military facilities, intelligence sites and symbols of the Iranian government. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the action as an effort to “remove threats,” though further details were not immediately disclosed.

Witnesses in Tehran reported hearing a powerful explosion near the compound associated with Khamenei. Authorities quickly blocked roads leading to the area while additional blasts were reported in other parts of the capital.

Nuclear Dispute Fuels Rising Tensions

Trump accused Iran of attempting to rebuild its nuclear programme despite earlier US strikes on nuclear facilities in June. He said diplomatic opportunities to address the issue had been rejected by Tehran.

Iran has consistently defended its right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes. However, it has resisted negotiations that include discussions about its long-range missile programme or its support for regional groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

The escalating standoff has also seen the United States deploy fighter jets and warships across the region, signalling Washington’s readiness to increase military pressure.

Regional Alert as Airspace Closes

Following the attacks, Iran shut down its airspace while neighbouring Iraq also temporarily closed its skies. Sirens sounded across Israel, with the Israeli military warning residents to prepare for potential missile launches.

Tehran has warned that any American involvement in attacks on its territory could trigger retaliation against US bases and personnel across the region. For now, authorities have not released casualty figures from the strikes.
