Washington DC: Amid rising military tensions in West Asia, the US is preparing to further strengthen its defenses. Given Iran's widespread use of drones, the US plans to soon deploy the MEROPS anti-drone system in the region. According to US officials, this system has proven effective in war zones and can help prevent small drone attacks.

Dealing with Drone Attacks Becoming a Challenge

US defense officials say that adequate technology is not yet available to counter small and inexpensive drone attacks in West Asia. Although the US has previously used advanced defense systems to prevent missile attacks, intercepting small drones has proven more complex.

For this reason, the US is now emphasizing new technology that can neutralize large numbers of drones at a low cost.

Concerns Growing Over Iranian Drones

Experts say the Shahed drones used by Iran are not technically very complex, but they pose a serious threat when launched in large numbers.

Russia has also used similar drones in the Ukraine war and is constantly improving them. This has become a new security challenge for the US and its allies.

Expensive Missiles vs. Cheap Drones

Until now, the US has used advanced missile systems like the Patriot missile system and THAAD to shoot down small drones.

But the problem is that a single drone can cost less than $50,000, while the missile used to shoot it down can cost millions of dollars. According to experts, this is not feasible from a cost-effective perspective, leading to the need for a cheap and fast anti-drone solution.

How the Merops System Works

The Merops anti-drone system is a modern anti-drone technology that detects, tracks, and destroys enemy drones mid-air.

The unique feature of this system is that it can be easily installed in a medium-sized pickup truck. It uses artificial intelligence (AI), which allows it to identify enemy drones.

Furthermore, even if signals or satellites are jammed, this system can navigate independently and destroy the target by approaching it.

Important Step for Regional Security

Experts believe that such technologies will become even more important in the future, given the growing threat of drone warfare. Deploying the MEROPS system in West Asia could help strengthen the security of US military bases and allied countries.
