America Exits International Solar Alliance, Signals Shift in Global Commitments
New Delhi: The administration led by US President Donald Trump has taken a significant and controversial step as part of its "America First" policy. According to a presidential memorandum issued by the White House, the US has withdrawn from a total of 65 international organizations, agreements, and institutions, including the India- and France-led International Solar Alliance (ISA). The administration claims that these organizations were acting against US national interests, sovereignty, and economic priorities.
The White House stated in a statement that US participation in these global institutions was not yielding the expected benefits to the country. The memorandum mentions withdrawal from 35 non-UN organizations and 31 UN-affiliated organizations. The administration claims that US resources were being misused in these forums and US interests were being ignored in policymaking.

The list of non-UN organizations includes major environmental organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The decision to withdraw has raised new questions about America's commitment to climate change and environmental protection.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in a social media post that the US is withdrawing from "66 anti-American, useless, or wasteful international organizations." He added that the Trump administration will stop subsidizing "globalist bureaucracies" that work against US interests.
The UN-affiliated institutions from which the US has withdrawn include the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the International Law Commission, the International Trade Center, the Peacebuilding Commission, UN Energy, the UN Population Fund, and UN Water. According to the memorandum, the US will no longer provide funding or support to these institutions to the extent permitted by law.

According to government documents, this decision was made after a report from the Secretary of State and detailed discussions with the Cabinet. The Trump administration believes that remaining in these organizations was contrary to US long-term interests. However, experts say the move could pose new challenges to global cooperation, especially on the climate and development fronts.
