New Delhi: A QUAD meeting took place today, Tuesday, May 26, in New Delhi, involving the Foreign Ministers of India, the United States, Australia, and Japan.

The Foreign Ministers of all these nations have arrived in India for this event. India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, welcomed the representatives from all the participating countries.

Participating in the QUAD meeting held in New Delhi alongside India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar were U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japan's Finance Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

In light of the impact on the global supply of crude oil and gas, India, Australia, Japan, and the United States have decided to establish a 'QUAD Fuel Security Forum.'

What is the QUAD Fuel Security Forum?

India, Australia, Japan, and the United States reiterated their commitment to ensuring energy stability and security, and announced their intention to organize a 'QUAD Fuel Security Forum' to coordinate high-level discussions and foster cooperation in these areas.

It was stated that the United States, Australia, India, and Japan will work—through an engagement plan—to identify areas of cooperation for the 'QUAD Initiative on Indo-Pacific Energy Security' across the fields of technology, management, policy, international market analysis, and emergency response exercises.

The objective of the QUAD Fuel Security Forum will be to identify and leverage the energy sector resources and capabilities of each respective country. This also includes strengthening their respective strategic petroleum systems.

India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, highlighted three key takeaways from this QUAD meeting.

A consensus was reached regarding the 'Indo-Pacific Maritime Surveillance Initiative' and the creation of a 'Common Operating Picture' for the maritime domain. S. Jaishankar stated, "Consideration will be given to establishing an expert panel on port infrastructure; furthermore, cooperation will be undertaken regarding a pilot port project in Fiji and on submarine cables." The Foreign Minister stated, "The QUAD Critical Minerals Framework has been finalized. Additionally, the India-US Critical Minerals Framework has also been signed. The QUAD is working in collaboration with other like-minded nations in this sector."

A QUAD initiative on Indo-Pacific energy security was announced, covering the fields of technology, management, policy, international market analysis, and emergency response exercises.

Commitment to Securing Energy Markets

A statement issued on behalf of the QUAD noted, "We recognize the impact of disruptions in global markets—particularly concerning oil, gas, and petrochemical products, as well as essential commodities and critical downstream derivatives—which disproportionately affect the Indo-Pacific region.

Our leaders have expressed a clear collective intent to cooperate on energy security and resilience. The QUAD nations reiterated their firm commitment to ensuring energy markets that are well-functioning, stable, transparent, secure, and resilient.

The QUAD emphasized the importance of secure and uninterrupted trade flows—including the safety of navigation and the security of infrastructure along critical maritime routes—which are deemed essential for global economic stability and energy security."
