JF-17 Thunder: Multirole Fighter Jet of China-Pakistan Partnership The JF-17 Thunder is the result of a joint effort by Pakistan and China. It started in the 1990s, when the US stopped supplying F-16 aircraft to Pakistan over its nuclear program. After this, in 1992, Pakistan signed an agreement with China, and work on this project started in 1995. The first JF-17 aircraft was received by the Pakistan Air Force in 2009, and till now more than 156 units of it are in service. It is a light, fast, and multi-purpose fighter aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of up to 13,500 kg. Its price ranges from $15 million (about ₹ 120 crores) to $30 million (₹ 250 crores) in the Block 3 version. The loss of several JF-17 aircraft has been confirmed in this action. F-16: The backbone of Pakistan's US-made aircraft The F-16 fighter aircraft was developed by the US defence company General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin). Pakistan ordered 40 F-16s in 1981, which were delivered between 1987. Later in 2005, Pakistan bought 18 more aircraft from the US, which now has 75–85 F-16 aircraft. The price of an F-16 depends on the model. Its price ranges from $40 to $70 million (₹330–₹580 crores). Pakistan has suffered losses of hundreds of crores of rupees per aircraft due to the F-16s shot down by India. AWACS: The eye of the sky, which cost heavily AWACS, i.e., Airborne Warning and Control System, is like the backbone of any country's air security. This aircraft can monitor enemy activities up to a distance of 400 kilometres or more. Pakistan has 9 such systems, including the Saab-2000 Erieye from Sweden and the ZDK-03 Karakoram Eagle from China. The Chinese system has already been retired, so it is suspected that the plane shot down in this action was a Saab-2000 Erieye. The cost of this aircraft ranges between $100–150 million (₹830–₹1245 crores). But when the radar system, control unit, logistics, and training are included in it, then this cost reaches $200 million (₹1660 crores). Total estimated economic loss If we talk about only 3–4 JF-17s, 2–3 F-16s, and 1 AWACS shot down in India's retaliatory action, then Pakistan has suffered a total economic loss of more than ₹5000–6000 crores.
