New Delhi: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has passed away. She had been battling several illnesses. It is noteworthy that her son, Tarique Rahman, returned to Bangladesh just days before her death after 19 years of exile.

Khaleda Zia was considered a significant figure in Bangladeshi politics. She served as the country's Prime Minister three times. However, she wasn't always interested in politics. Her husband, Ziaur Rahman, used to call her a shy housewife. Let's learn more about Ziaur Rahman.

Who was Ziaur Rahman?
In the 1960s, Zia was a captain in the Pakistani Army. But in 1971, during the Liberation War, Ziaur Rahman rebelled against the Pakistani Army and participated in the war.

After Bangladesh's independence, he was appointed Chief of the Bangladesh Army on August 25, 1975. Then, in 1977, he became the President of Bangladesh.

Became the first elected president
In 1978, Zia founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Following this, the party achieved a resounding victory in 1979. After this victory, Ziaur Rahman became the first elected president of Bangladesh.

Zia had been facing threats to his life for quite some time. Despite warnings from the Bangladeshi intelligence department, Zia traveled to Chittagong. There, some army officers assassinated him.

It is said that Lieutenant Colonel Motiur Rahman played a key role in Zia's assassination. He was angry after the transfer of Major General Mohammad Abul Manzoor, the GOC of Chittagong. As a result, the BNP lost its leader, and this marked Khaleda Zia's entry into Bangladeshi politics.
