New Delhi: After weeks of heightened tensions in the Gulf region, diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran appear to be gaining momentum. A proposed framework agreement, reportedly backed by the administration of US President Donald Trump, aims to reduce regional instability and create conditions for broader negotiations.
While no final agreement has been reached, reports indicate that negotiators have prepared a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining several confidence-building measures intended to lower tensions and restore stability.
The initiative comes after months of concerns over military activity, energy security, and the possibility of a wider conflict involving regional powers. President Trump has publicly expressed optimism about the talks, describing them as a pathway toward a broader settlement involving the United States, Iran and Israel.
However, Iranian officials have stated that no final decision has yet been made regarding the proposed framework.
One of the most significant provisions reportedly involves the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route through which a large share of the world's oil supply passes.
Under the proposal, Iran would allow unrestricted commercial shipping through the waterway, helping reduce concerns over disruptions to global energy markets.
The United States is expected to consider easing certain sanctions imposed on Iran. Such a move could help Iran expand oil exports, improve financial access and support economic recovery.
The reported sanctions relief would likely be linked to Tehran's adherence to the terms of the agreement.
The framework also includes a proposal to extend the existing ceasefire arrangement for an additional 60 days, providing more time for diplomatic engagement.
Another key element focuses on Iran's nuclear programme. Tehran would reportedly reaffirm that it is not seeking nuclear weapons and participate in further discussions regarding its uranium stockpile and future nuclear activities.
Reports also suggest that the United States could consider reducing its military presence in areas surrounding Iran, addressing one of Tehran's longstanding concerns.
If implemented, the proposed framework could mark a significant step toward reducing regional tensions, stabilising energy markets and reviving diplomatic dialogue between the two countries.
