New Delhi: The annual Amarnath Yatra will commence on July 3 this year and conclude on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. The announcement was made by Manoj Sinha on Sunday.

The pilgrimage will span 57 days, drawing thousands of devotees from across India and abroad to the revered Himalayan shrine.

Pratham Puja on June 29

According to the Lieutenant Governor’s office, the ‘Pratham Puja’—marking the ceremonial beginning of the Yatra will be held on June 29, coinciding with Jyeshtha Purnima. The ritual is performed to seek blessings of Lord Shiva before the pilgrimage begins.

Registration Process Begins April 15

Advance registration for the Yatra will open from April 15 through both online and offline modes. Devotees can register at 554 designated bank branches, including those of Jammu & Kashmir Bank, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, and Yes Bank.

Authorities have urged pilgrims to complete registration early to ensure smooth participation in the annual journey.

Sacred Cave Shrine and Its Significance

The Amarnath Cave is located at an altitude of 3,888 metres in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The shrine houses a naturally formed ice stalagmite, believed by devotees to symbolise Lord Shiva.

This structure waxes and wanes with the lunar cycle, adding to the spiritual significance of the pilgrimage.

Two Routes for Pilgrims

Devotees can reach the shrine via two routes. The traditional Pahalgam route spans around 34 kilometres and typically takes three to five days, passing through Chandanwari, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni. This route is known for its scenic beauty but requires physical endurance due to steep climbs like Pissu Top and Mahagunas Pass.

Alternatively, the shorter Baltal route in Ganderbal district covers about 14 kilometres and allows pilgrims to complete the journey in a single day.

Facilities and Helicopter Services

Along both routes, facilities such as free community kitchens (langars), medical aid, and accommodation tents are arranged for pilgrims. Helicopter services are also available from both Pahalgam and Baltal, offering a convenient option for those unable to undertake the trek.
