Significance and Rituals of Purnima
Purnima is considered highly auspicious in Hindu tradition, symbolizing spiritual completeness and divine blessings. Devotees observe the day with devotion and discipline through various rituals:
Taking a holy bath in a sacred river is considered highly meritorious. If that is not possible, adding Gangajal to bath water at home is believed to be beneficial.
Devotees take a sankalp (vow) for fasting and spiritual observance after morning rituals.
Worship is offered to Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Shiva, and Chandra Dev.
In the evening, devotees offer Arghya to the Moon after performing puja during an auspicious muhurat.
Recitation or listening to the Satyanarayan Katha is considered especially auspicious on this day.
Purnima Vrat Rules and Food Guidelines
Those observing the Purnima fast generally follow a phalahari diet, avoiding grains throughout the day. Common permitted foods include:
Milk and dairy products like paneer
Fresh fruits
Dry fruits such as almonds and cashews
Makhana (fox nuts)
Light vegetables like cucumber, bottle gourd, and tomatoes
Some devotees may choose to observe a stricter fast by consuming only water.
Jyeshtha Purnima is thus observed as a day of devotion, purity, and spiritual reflection, marked by fasting, prayer, and lunar worship.
