New Delhi: No matter how expensive your skincare products are, if your sunscreen isn’t effective, your skin remains unprotected. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can cause sunburn, premature wrinkles, and even skin cancer, making sunscreen an essential part of your daily routine.

With so many options available, choosing the right sunscreen can be confusing. Here’s what to keep in mind to ensure complete protection:

1. Check the Label for These Three Key Things

SPF (Sun Protection Factor): Indicates protection against UV-B rays. Always choose SPF 30 or higher for 97–98% coverage.

Broad Spectrum: Ensures protection against both UV-A and UV-B rays. SPF alone is not enough.

PA Rating: Found as PA+, PA++, or PA+++, it measures protection against UV-A rays. The more “+” signs, the better the protection. Aim for PA+++ or higher.

2. Choose Sunscreen According to Your Skin Type

  • Oily/Acne-Prone Skin: Gel-based or matte sunscreens are ideal. Look for non-comedogenic products.
  • Dry Skin: Cream-based sunscreens with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides work best.
  • Sensitive Skin: Mineral or physical sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are safer, as they sit on top of the skin instead of being absorbed.

3. Apply Sunscreen Correctly

Two-Finger Rule: Use an amount equal to the length of your first two fingers for your face and neck.

  • Apply 15–20 Minutes Before Sun: This allows the sunscreen to fully absorb and form a protective layer.
  • Reapply Every 2–3 Hours: Especially if you’re outdoors for a long time, sweating, or swimming.
  • By choosing the right sunscreen and applying it correctly, you can keep your skin safe from harmful UV rays and maintain a healthy, youthful complexion.
