Mumbai: The new mayor of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been chosen. Senior BJP corporator Ritu Tawde has been elected to the post of BMC mayor. This announcement was made by BJP president Amit Satam. Tawde's name was finalized amid chanting of mantras and chants of "Jai Shivaji Maharaj" at a crucial meeting held at the BMC headquarters.
This is the first time a BJP candidate will be elected as Mumbai mayor. Ritu Tawde is a three-time councilor from the Ghatkopar area. She first won from ward number 127 in 2012, followed by ward number 121 in 2017 and ward number 132 in 2025. She has also served as chairperson of the BMC's education committee. Tawde is popular within the party and the public for her friendly nature and public service.

Sanjay Ghadi of the Shiv Sena Shinde faction has been appointed Deputy Mayor in the BJP-led alliance. This decision was taken in light of the BMC election results and ensuring a majority. In a meeting, both parties, keeping the alliance's interests and strategy in mind, assigned the Deputy Mayor post to the Shiv Sena Shinde faction.
According to the BMC election results, the BJP won 89 seats, while the Shiv Sena Shinde faction secured 29 seats. This brought the alliance past the 114-seat mark required for a majority. On the other hand, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena secured 65 seats. The MNS secured 6 seats, and the NCP secured 1 seat. This result clarified the power position and strengthened the alliance's hold on the administration.

Ritu Tawde's election as Mayor is a historic moment for the BJP. She has been active in local governance and social development for the past several years.
