As vote counting gathered momentum in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections on Friday, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi issued a sharp reaction, alleging erosion of trust in India’s democratic institutions.
His remarks came amid early trends showing the BJP-Shiv Sena-led Mahayuti alliance leading across several municipal wards.
Taking to social media platform X, Gandhi accused the Election Commission of undermining public confidence.
“Election commission gaslighting citizens is how trust has collapsed in our democracy. Vote Chori is an anti-national act,” he wrote, sparking a fresh political controversy at a crucial moment in the counting process.
In Ward 185, Ravi Raja, who had joined the BJP after leaving the Congress, has lost the election. Ravi Raja was a Congress leader in the previous term.
AIMIM has made inroads into Abu Azmi’s stronghold of Shivaji Nagar, Govandi. Owaisi’s party is leading by 136 and 137 votes in the area and is likely to win. This indicates that the Samajwadi Party may lose its hold over Shivaji Nagar, Govandi.
In the latest BMC election trends, BJP has crossed the 100-seat milestone. According to current leads, the BJP-led alliance is ahead on 102 seats, the Uddhav Thackeray faction’s alliance is leading on 63 seats, Congress on 9 seats, while others are ahead on 6 seats.
In the Mumbai–Goregaon area, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) candidate Jitendra Valvi has won from Ward 53.
Congress has won Ward 33 in the BMC election results. Qamar Jahan Moin Siddiqui, sister of Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh, has emerged victorious from the ward.
Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM has surprised everyone in the BMC elections. AIMIM candidates have won in three Mumbai wards-Irshad Khan from Ward 135, Mahjabeen Atiq Ahmed from Ward 134, and Khairunnisa Hussain from Ward 145.
AIMIM has registered a victory in Ward 134, Mankhurd Mandala village. Party candidate Mahjabeen Atiq Ahmed has won the seat, marking the third win for Owaisi’s party so far.
Another candidate of Asaduddin Owaisi has won in the BMC polls. Khairunnisa Hussain secured victory from Ward 145. With this win, Owaisi’s party has now won two seats so far.
AIMIM has registered its first victory in the BMC, with party candidate Irshad Khan winning from Ward 135.
After his victory, Milind Vaidy said, “I am happy today. I am a disciple of Balasaheb Thackeray and have followed his words. He had said that after him, we must take care of his son and grandson, and we are fulfilling that promise. The rest are traitors who left. I have served as mayor before and am a staunch supporter of the Thackerays, so I will continue to work.”
Yogita Gawli, daughter of Arun Gawli, contesting from Byculla 207, has faced defeat. BJP’s candidate Rohida Lokhande has emerged victorious.
BJP’s candidate Navnath Ban has emerged victorious in the Muslim-majority Mankhurd ward.
BJP has secured a victory in South Mumbai. The party won in Wards 214 and 215, with Ajay Patil and Santosh Dhale emerging victorious.
The candidate from Uddhav Thackeray’s faction has won in Mahim. Meanwhile, BJP is celebrating its victory in Mankhurd.
The BMC election results bring bad news for Nawab Malik’s brother. Captain Malik has lost the election. Ashraf Azmi has won from the Kurla West ward.
In the BMC elections, BJP candidate Vikram Rajput has won Ward No. 50, Bangur Nagar, Goregaon. He defeated Tanvi Dinesh Rao, the Gen-Z candidate from Shiv Sena UBT.

Mahayuti seemed set to dominate, but trends show a tight contest. BJP leads with 53 seats, while Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena closely follows with 43 seats, keeping Mumbai’s civic election outcome unpredictable.
Counting for the Maharashtra BMC Election 2026 is in progress. Early trends indicate the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is ahead, while the Thackeray faction is losing its earlier lead. Around 1,700 candidates contested across Mumbai’s 227 wards. So far, Mahayuti leads with 68 seats, the Shiv Sena (UBT)–MNS alliance trails at 51 seats, and Congress holds 11 seats.
Early trends from the BMC Election 2026 indicate a clear lead for the BJP-led alliance. Out of 111 seats counted so far, the BJP alliance is ahead on 68 seats, moving comfortably past the halfway mark. The Thackeray brothers are trailing with 42 seats, while Congress leads on 11 seats and others on 6.
