Maharashtra: Heavy rain disrupts life in several parts of state; 14 killed and over 100 evacuated

Mumbai: Continuous heavy rains in Maharashtra is disrupting life of people. Flood-like conditions have rise in several parts of the state. 14 people have died in various rain-related incidents and hundreds of people have been evacuated to some other safer places so far. While 8 people lost their lives in the floods caused by cloudburst in Nanded. Reports of deaths have also come from other districts.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed to the public to be alert and said that the next 48 hours are very sensitive. He said that crops of 12 to 14 lakh acres have been destroyed due to rain, and the state government is active to monitor the situation.

Tragedy In Nanded

8 people died in the floods caused by cloudburst in Nanded. Mumbai recorded around 300 mm of rain, leaving many areas submerged. The Mithi river reached the danger mark, and more than 400 people were sent to relief camps.

Local trains have slowed down or are running late. 14 trains cancelled and several diverted due to this situation. The Central Railway has cancelled 7 pairs (14) long-distance trains due to heavy rains and waterlogging on tracks.

According to CPRO Dr Swapnil Neela, 16 trains have been rescheduled, 6 trains have been terminated or started midway and 2 trains have been diverted. Low-lying areas are submerged due to continuous rains in Gadchiroli. More than 50 villages have lost connectivity due to the overflowing of the Pearlkota river.

Kolhapur-Ratnagiri Highway Closed

The Kolhapur-Ratnagiri highway was closed for several hours due to landslides. Roads are also blocked due to floods in areas like Bhamragad and Nagothane. The Panchganga river is again flowing above the danger level due to 11,500 cusecs of water released from Radhanagari dam in Kolhapur. Water is also being released from Chandoli dam and Koyna dam, due to which the water level of Warna and Koyna rivers has increased.

Weather Department Warning

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), this rain is happening due to the low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal and strong monsoon winds. SD Sanap, senior scientist of IMD Pune, said, Monsoon trough has become active from North Konkan to Kerala. Heavy to very heavy rains expected in Konkan, Mumbai and Central Maharashtra in the next two days. Orange alert issued in Marathwada and Vidarbha.
