Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday launched a strong attack on the BJP over the law-and-order situation in West Bengal. Party claimed that 2,454 rape cases were registered in the state over a five-month period.
In a post on X, the All India Trinamool Congress cited figures attributed to the State Crime Records Bureau. The party also claimed that the in the same period, state recorded 600 murder cases, 13,114 attempted murder cases and 32,341 cases of assault causing severe injuries.
“2,400+ RAPE CASES IN BENGAL IN JUST 5 MONTHS UNDER BJP!” the TMC said in its post, accusing the BJP of creating an atmosphere in which women and ordinary citizens were increasingly being forced to live in fear.
TMC also questioned the BJP's claim of providing a “safe and secure Bengal”, asking whether the crime figures were consistent with the promises made by the party.
“Is this the ‘safe and secure Bengal’ BJP promised?” the TMC asked, referring to the BJP's “Bhorsha In, Bhoy Out” slogan.
The party said the people of Bengal deserved “security, accountability and justice” instead of what it described as “jumlas”.
The TMC also stepped up its attack on CM Suvendu Adhikari, accusing him of relying on “slogans and hollow promises” while failing to address the concerns of the people.
“YOU have failed the people of Bengal,” the party said, adding that it had been raising concerns over the issue since the beginning.
The TMC alleged that the BJP's shortcomings on law and order were becoming increasingly difficult to conceal and sought accountability over the crime figures it cited.
The party's allegations come amid a continuing political battle in West Bengal over law and order, with the TMC and BJP frequently trading charges over the safety of women and ordinary citizens.
