Weather Alert: Rain wreaks havoc in Himachal; Over 400 roads blocked, no electricity in many areas

Himachal Pradesh including Mandi and Kullu has experienced heavy rains, flooding, and landslides, causing chaos and disruption in the state. Over 400 roads have been closed, with no electricity and 178 water supply schemes failing. The Meteorological Department (SDMA) warns that 208 people have died due to monsoon rains. Landslides, flash floods, and house collapses have claimed the lives of at least 112 people. Mandi and Kullu districts are the most severely impacted, with 240 roads closed, over 300 damaged power lines, and 99 roadblocks in Kullu. The SDMA is implementing temporary repairs and alternate routes to preserve connectivity and critical services.

Shimla: Continues massive rain have turned most of the areas in the state into deserted places with throwing life out of gear. Kullu and Mandi were among the many places that were flooded. Over four hundred roads have been shut down. National highways are part of this. Power transformers number 704 have sustained damage. Additionally up to 178 water supply schemes have failed. Roads have been washed away in several places. People have been cautioned not to approach the rivers.

The state is already experiencing heavy rains according to a warning from the Meteorological Department. According to the SDMA 208 people have died as a result of the monsoon rains thus far.

112 People Lost Lives

Landslides flash floods and house collapses claimed the lives of at least 112 people. In the accident at least 96 people lost their lives. According to officials Mandi and Kullu districts are the most severely impacted. There are 240 roads in Mandi that are closed. There are over 300 damaged power lines. In Kullu there are 99 roadblocks.

Additionally the National Highway was closed. The landslide occurred on NH-305 at Zahed (Khanag). Electricity is an issue in many places and 72 transformers in Kangra are in poor condition. In addition there were power and water supply interruptions and road blockages in Shimla Sirmaur Chamba Solan Bilaspur and Una. All of the impacted districts are currently undergoing restoration. Yet the work has been delayed because of the intense rains.

Cloudburst In Kullu

In order to preserve connectivity and critical services the SDMA stated that temporary repairs and alternate routes are being employed. Kullu district experienced a cloudburst. The districts Shahpur area is where the incident happened. Baroi Nullahs water level has risen according to the Central Water Commission Mohali Assistant Engineer Fire Station Jari Public Works Department Manikaran and DPCR Kullu. The Sharod canal is linked to this one.

Heavy rainfall is expected in Himachal Pradesh according to a warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Over the next few days there will likely be a lot of rain in many areas of the state. On August 11 and 12 the IMD has issued a yellow alert in the remaining districts and an orange alert in three districts. People have been urged by the SDMA to use caution and take only necessary trips.
