Phagwara: The situation at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab has become the centre of a major controversy after student protests erupted on campus following allegations of an unverified rape claim. The unrest at one of India’s largest private universities, which has around 40,000 students, raised questions over the circumstances behind the agitation, the spread of rumours and the reasons behind the sudden escalation.
The Punjab Police has started an investigation into the incident, while authorities are examining the claims, student concerns and events that led to the campus disturbance.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav visited the LPU campus on Monday and stated that the preliminary investigation so far has not found evidence indicating that any rape took place at the university. The police are continuing to examine all available information before reaching a final conclusion.
The agitation at LPU began in the early hours of Sunday after allegations related to a sexual assault incident circulated among students. The claims triggered anger and protests inside the campus, leading to heightened security arrangements and involvement of senior police officials.

Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia has alleged that the violence was linked to political developments involving LPU founder chairman and Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal. Majithia claimed that Mittal’s decision to leave the Aam Aadmi Party and join the BJP was connected to the unrest.
Ashok Mittal had joined the BJP in April 2026 along with several other AAP Rajya Sabha members. The political controversy has added another layer to the ongoing debate surrounding the campus situation.
The controversy has gained further attention due to the scheduled BJP rally near the LPU campus, which is set to be addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on September 30.
The timing of the political event has intensified discussions among political parties, although authorities are continuing to focus on the investigation into the campus unrest.
The Congress party has also criticised the Punjab government over the situation. The party’s official social media handle claimed that the LPU situation reflected failures in handling law and order and demanded accountability from the state administration.
