The Left Declines In India
New Delhi: A major shift has unfolded in Indian politics. With the fall of the Vijayan government in Kerala, the political power of Leftist parties in the country has come to a complete end. This marks the first time since 1977 that no Indian state is governed by a Leftist party. Once a dominant force with a firm grip on power, Leftist politics now appears to be passing through its weakest phase.
Kerala: The Last Stronghold Slips Away
Kerala has long been regarded as a robust hub for Leftist ideology. The state has historically witnessed a cyclical transfer of power between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). The LDF had been in power for the last 10 years and was hopeful of securing a third consecutive victory; however, this time, the UDF emerged victorious. Significantly, Kerala was the final fortress of the Leftist parties; with its fall, they now hold no representation in any state government across the country.
A Journey Begun in 1957
In 1957, the Communist Party of India (CPI) formed a government in Kerala for the very first time. Led by E.M.S. Namboodiripad, this administration is recognized as the world's first democratically elected Leftist government. It was a historic milestone-not only for India but for global politics as well.
West Bengal: Three Decades of Rule
West Bengal has historically stood as the strongest pillar of Leftist politics. From 1977 to 2011, the state remained under the continuous rule of Leftist parties. Under the leadership of figures such as Jyoti Basu-and subsequently Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee-the Leftist parties maintained a deep and firm grip on the state's political landscape. However, in 2011, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress brought an end to this 34-year-old regime. Issues such as industrialization and land acquisition eroded the Left parties' mass base.
Tripura: The End of a 25-Year Journey
In Tripura as well, the Left parties had consolidated their hold since 1977. Under the leadership of Manik Sarkar, the Left government ruled for a prolonged period; however, with the rise of the BJP in 2018, the era of the Left came to an end there as well. Issues concerning employment and wages among the youth played a pivotal role in this shift.
Diminishing Influence on the Global Stage
The influence of Left-wing politics is on the decline not only in India but also on a global scale. Today, only a handful of nations-such as Russia, Cuba, and North Korea-remain where governments based on Leftist ideology still survive. While the Communist Party undoubtedly holds power in China, the influence of capitalism is clearly evident in its policies.
