New Delhi: The southwest monsoon is expected to remain active across large parts of northern and central India over the next few days, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue rain and thunderstorm alerts for several states.
Between August 4 and August 8, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and parts of eastern and northeastern India are likely to witness widespread rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning at isolated places.

The IMD has placed Delhi under a Yellow Alert for August 4, forecasting light to moderate rainfall at several locations during the day. Cloudy skies are expected to persist, while thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph may occur during the morning, evening and night.
Similar weather conditions are likely to continue over the next few days across the National Capital Region, including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.
The weather department has predicted an active monsoon phase over both western and eastern Uttar Pradesh through August 8. Bihar is also expected to receive widespread rainfall until at least August 5, while Jharkhand is likely to witness heavy showers until August 7.
Persistent rainfall could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and a rise in river water levels, particularly in districts already affected by seasonal flooding.
Hill states, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the coming days. Authorities have warned of possible landslides, flash floods and lightning incidents in vulnerable areas. Tourists and residents have been advised to monitor local advisories before travelling to mountainous regions.

Heavy rainfall activity is also forecast across Madhya Pradesh between August 5 and August 9, with wind speeds of up to 50 kmph possible in some areas.
Cities such as Bhopal, Indore and Ujjain may witness intense showers. Meanwhile, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are expected to continue receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next seven days as the monsoon remains vigorous across the Northeast.
The IMD has advised people living in flood-prone and low-lying areas to remain alert during periods of heavy rainfall. Residents have also been urged to avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms, follow local administration advisories, and exercise caution while travelling during adverse weather conditions.
The weather situation will continue to be monitored, and forecasts may be updated depending on the movement of the monsoon system.
