Assam Floods: Death Toll Rises to 41, Over 700,000 People Affected Across 25 Districts

Assam's flood crisis has intensified with the death toll climbing to 41 and more than 727,000 people affected across 25 districts. Army, IAF and NDRF teams are carrying out large-scale rescue operations.

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with the death toll rising to 41 and more than 700,000 people affected across 25 districts, according to the reports Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Ten fatalities were reported on Wednesday alone, there are joint rescue operations are underway by the authorities.

The government has set up 469 relief camps across 25 flood-affected districts, where around 18,000 displaced people have taken shelter.

More Than 100 People Missing

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that over 100 people remain missing, warning that the death toll could increase over the next few days as search and rescue operations continue in the worst-hit areas.

Army, IAF and NDRF Lead Rescue Efforts

The Indian Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Assam Rifles and Fire & Emergency Services are jointly conducting rescue operations.

Under Operation Jal Rahat, the Army has rescued more than 700 stranded people. The IAF has also deployed helicopters to air-drop relief supplies. According to the Chief Minister, three sorties delivered 627 kg of relief material to stranded families in Nazira. Drone surveillance is also being used to identify inaccessible areas and assess damage.

Transport Network Hit Hard

Floodwaters have submerged several roads, disrupting connectivity in multiple districts. Railway operations have also been severely affected, with damaged tracks forcing the cancellation or rescheduling of more than 30 trains. Rescue teams are relying heavily on boats to reach marooned villages.

Major Rivers Above Danger Level

The Central Water Commission (CWC) said that the Brahmaputra, Burhidihing, Dikhow, Disang and Dhansiri rivers are flowing above the danger level, while water levels in the Barak, Kopili and Kushiyara rivers continue to rise. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall in parts of Upper Assam, raising concerns that the flood situation could worsen further in the coming days.
