Heavy Rains Trigger Assam Flood Emergency as Rivers Cross Danger Levels. (Image: Internet)
Guwahati: The first major flood spell of the monsoon season has created a serious situation in Assam, with more than 22,000 people affected across six districts following days of continuous rainfall in Assam and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floodwaters have impacted Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur and Kokrajhar districts. Dhemaji remains the worst-hit area, with over 15,000 residents facing difficulties due to rising water levels.
Flooding and riverbank erosion have disrupted rail connectivity after a railway bridge between Archipathar and Simen Chapari stations suffered damage. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) suspended train operations on the route until further notice.
Officials said severe erosion washed away a large portion of the riverbank, making one bridge pier unstable. The bridge, built in 1965 and later converted for broad-gauge operations, was previously considered safe.
No train accidents or injuries have been reported. The affected route has limited traffic, and services had already been restricted as a precaution due to the swollen river.
The railway authorities have arranged buses for passengers travelling between Murkongselek and Silapathar. Help desks have also been opened at key stations to assist travellers.
The floods have submerged nearly 96 villages and damaged around 1,690 hectares of agricultural land. Officials reported that more than 48,000 livestock animals have also been affected by the floodwaters.
Several rivers, including the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, are witnessing rising levels. The Disang River in Sivasagar district has crossed the danger mark, increasing concerns of further flooding.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said authorities are monitoring the situation closely, especially in Dhemaji. He assured that government resources are being mobilised to provide immediate assistance and support long-term rehabilitation for affected families.
