Bengal: Landslide due to heavy rain kills father, daughter in Drajeeling

Darjeeling: Massive landslides due to heavy rain killed a man and his daughter in West Bengal's Darjeeling, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

According to the information, the deceased are identified as a 28-year-old Pranil Limbu and his eight-year-old daughter, Samantha Limbu. Pranil Limbu was working on the slope of the hill when suddenly heavy rocks started falling.

The accident happened on Wednesday afternoon when they were working on repairing drinking water pipes near their house.

Death during landslide
Pranil Limbu was working on the slope of the hill when suddenly heavy rocks started falling. Both were buried under the stones. Local villagers immediately carried out rescue operations and took Samantha out of the debris and took her to the primary health center, but she died on the way. Pranil's body was later taken out of the ditch with the help of local people and police.

Due to continuous rain, there were a lot of difficulties in the rescue work. Roads were blocked due to landslides, which affected the relief work. Police and fire department teams also reached the spot immediately and the bodies were recovered with the help of local people.

Reaction of administration and local people
Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) councilor Keshavraj Pokhrel called the incident very sad and assured all possible help to the family of the deceased. GTA Chief Executive Officer Anit Thapa will also visit the deceased family. Local people are worried about continuous rain and increasing incidents of landslides.

Increasing danger of rain and landslides
It has been raining continuously since Tuesday morning in the hilly areas including Darjeeling. Due to this, incidents of landslides are taking place at many places. This is the first death due to landslide in Darjeeling this year. Last year also many workers have lost their lives due to this reason.

About 10 houses damaged due to landslide
About 10 houses have been damaged due to landslide in Ward No. 17 of Darjeeling Municipality. Also, traffic on Bengal-Sikkim National Highway No. 10 was also disrupted due to debris, which was normalized after removing it. The administration has urged people to use alternative routes without taking risks.

The local administration has appealed to the people to be cautious in view of the incidents of landslides. It is important to avoid taking unnecessary risks in hilly areas during the rains. Also, the administration and the villagers together are emphasizing on taking better safety measures.
