New Delhi: The results of by-elections to five assembly seats have been announced on Monday. In Gujarat, the BJP grabbed the Kadi seat while Visavadar seat was won by the AAP. Kerala’s Nilambur seat has gone to UDF. The TMC recorded a landslide victory in Kaliganj, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

The counting of votes began at 8 am amid tight security. The by-polls on 19 June were held for two seats in Gujarat – Visavadar and Kadi assembly seats – and one each in Punjab (Ludhiana West), Bengal (Kaliganj), and Kerala (Nilambur).

Assembly Seats Fell Vacant

Three assembly seats – Kadi in Gujarat, Kaliganj in West Bengal, Ludhiana West in Punjab fell vacant following the deaths of legislators while polling was done in Visavadar in Gujarat and Nilambur in Kerala due to sitting MLAs resignation.

Nilambur seat in Kerala logged the highest polling percentage of 73.26 % and the lowest was recorded in Ludhiana West (51.33 %) in Punjab.

By-Election Result

The results of the by-election will not affect the power of any state, but if Aam Aadmi Party wins in Punjab, the way will be cleared for AAP to get a Rajya Sabha MP. It is being speculated that if AAP wins in Punjab, Arvind Kejriwal can go to Rajya Sabha.

On the Kadi seat of Gujarat, BJP's Rajendra Kumar (Rajubhai) Daneshwar Chavda defeated Congress candidate Rameshbhai Chavda by 39452 votes.

AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora won the Ludhiana West seat of Punjab by 10637 votes. Bharat Bhushan Ashu of Congress remained second.

On the Nilambur seat of Kerala, Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shaukat won by 11077 votes.

TMC is leading in the Kaliganj seat of West Bengal. Voting was held on 19 June on all five seats. After the crushing defeat of Aam Aadmi Party in the Delhi Assembly elections this year, questions were being raised about the future of the party.

Questions were also being raised on the political future of its convener Arvind Kejriwal. But, the party going through a difficult phase has now got a new lease of life. In the by-elections held on five assembly seats in four states of the country, the party seems to be getting good success.
