Avalanche strikes Kailash Mountain in Kinnaur
Shimla: An avalanche occurred near the Kinnaur Kailash mountain in Ribba village of Kinnaur district around noon on Monday. Fortunately, there was no loss of life or property as the snow mass slid into a deep ravine.
Fresh snowfall was reported in several high-altitude areas, including the Atal Tunnel-Rohtang, Kothi, Kalpa, Solang Nala, Manali, Sangla, Jot, Keylong and Kufri.
Morning fog reduced visibility in Bilaspur, Mandi and Kalpa, with Bilaspur recording the lowest visibility at around 100 metres.
Most parts of Himachal Pradesh witnessed bright sunshine during the day, leading to a rise of up to six degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures. Shimla, however, remained under cloudy skies. Despite the daytime warmth, minimum temperatures dipped below 5°C at 13 locations across the state.
The sharpest rise in maximum temperature was recorded in Dharamshala (6°C), followed by Kalpa (5.1°C), Kangra (5°C), and Mandi and Bhuntar (4°C each).
Meanwhile, a fall in temperatures was also observed at some places. Nahan and Tabo saw a drop of 1.2°C, while Kangra recorded a decline of 4.8°C, Tabo 4.3°C, and Bhuntar, Kalpa and Mandi 3.4°C each. Minimum temperatures fell below freezing at four locations, with Tabo recording the lowest at -7.9°C, followed by Kukumseri (-6.6°C), Kalpa (-3.8°C) and Manali (-0.4°C). Gohar in Mandi district received the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours at 20 mm.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, light snowfall is likely at one or two places in higher reaches on Tuesday, while cloud cover may persist in some areas.
A fresh western disturbance is expected to become active from February 8, bringing renewed spells of rain and snowfall across the state.
