Azam Khan gets bail from Allahabad High Court in Dungarpur ‘forced eviction’ case

New Delhi: Senior Samajwadi Party leader and former minister Azam Khan has gotten a big relief from the Allahabad High Court. During the hearing on the criminal appeal filed against the 10-year sentence given by the MP-MLA court in the famous Dungarpur case of Rampur, the High Court has accepted his bail application.

What is the Dungarpur case?

The Dungarpur case started in December 2016, when a man named Abrar alleged that Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, retired CO Ale Hasan Khan, and contractor Barkat Ali assaulted him, vandalized the house, and threatened to kill him. It is also alleged that his house was forcibly demolished.

Almost three years after this incident, in August 2019, Abrar lodged an FIR in Thana Ganj of Rampur. Later, the case was sent to the MP-MLA Special Court, where on May 30, 2024, the court sentenced Azam Khan to 10 years and Barkat Ali to 7 years.

Criminal appeal in Allahabad High Court

Azam Khan and Barkat Ali both filed a criminal appeal in the Allahabad High Court against the decision of the MP-MLA court. In the appeal, he pleaded that they should be granted bail till the matter is pending.

On August 12, 2025, the hearing of both the parties was completed in the High Court, after which the court reserved its decision. The court of Justice Sameer Jain on Wednesday accepted the bail application of both Azam Khan and Barkat Ali.

Legal arguments and defense

On behalf of Azam Khan, his lawyers, senior advocates Imran Ullah and Mohammad Khalid, argued in the court. He said that the appeal is pending and questions have been raised on the validity of the sentence. On this basis, interim bail was sought.
