Bengaluru: An acute shortage of auto LPG has disrupted autorickshaw services in Bengaluru, sharply reducing vehicle availability across the city. A large section of the city’s autorickshaw fleet off the roads, leaving commuters struggling with last-mile connectivity.

Nearly Half the Fleet Off Roads

Industry estimates suggest that nearly 50% of the city’s autorickshaws are currently off the roads due to fuel shortages. Drivers are struggling to access LPG, leading to fewer vehicles in operation and longer wait times for passengers.

The disruption has also hit drivers’ earnings, making it difficult for many to maintain regular work schedules.

Private Outlets Shut, Pressure on PSU Stations

The crisis has intensified due to the closure of a majority of private LPG dispensing stations. Nearly 80% of such outlets in Karnataka are reportedly non-operational.

As a result, public sector fuel stations are witnessing heavy rush, with drivers queuing up for hours. Many are forced to visit multiple stations or wait for fresh supplies to arrive.

Supply Boost Fails to Meet Demand

Indian Oil Corporation has increased LPG supply to meet rising demand, with daily distribution seeing a notable jump in recent weeks.

However, officials say infrastructure constraints, including limited dispensing capacity and fewer outlets, continue to hinder adequate supply.

Price Gap Adds to the Problem

A price difference between private and public outlets has added to the pressure. LPG is cheaper at government-run stations, pushing more drivers toward them and worsening congestion at these points.

This imbalance has made it harder to evenly distribute demand.

Drivers Advised to Switch to Petrol

Authorities have advised drivers to temporarily switch to petrol, noting that a large share of autorickshaws are equipped with dual-fuel systems. While some drivers have begun making the shift, the overall disruption persists, and normal services are yet to stabilise.
