New delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inagurate the Bhogapuram International Airport towards this month end. Situated near the present Vishakapatnam Airport, the new airport will handle the main commercial traffic to the tune of around 30 lakh passengers annually in the initial years. The present Vizag airport will play a secondary role.
The Union Civil Aviation Minister, K Rammohan Naidu, who after counducting a review meeting the airport site, said both the Ministry of Civil aviation and the state government had invited
Prime Minister to inagurate the airport. He said PMO has tentatively cleared the schedule but with the Monsoon session of Parliament scheduled to commence on July 20, Prime Minister
is expected to choose a weekend date after the session begins.
Minister Naidu said that the User Development Fee(UDF) approved for Bhogapuram airport and the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority(AERA) had arrived at the tariff after assessing factors such as project cost, expected passenger traffic and financial viability.
AERA has approved a UDF of Rs 835 for domestice departures and Rs 355 for arrivals, while international passengers will pay rs 1255 for departures and Rs 545 for arrivals. At present, no UDF is levied at the Airporst Authority of India managed by Vishakapatnam airport.
He said passengers from Vishakapatnam would not face connectivity issues, as the government had upgraded road access through seven routes leading to the airport, located about 60 km from the city.
