New Delhi: A building collapse in Maharashtra's Pimpri-Chinchwad on Wednesday triggered a large-scale rescue operation after several people were feared trapped under debris in the Moshi area.
The incident occurred after heavy rainfall caused a large accumulation of garbage and debris to collapse onto an office building. The impact brought down a concrete slab, trapping people inside the premises.
According to Pimpri-Chinchwad Mayor Ravi Landge, around 16 office employees were inside the building having lunch when the slab suddenly collapsed.
Two people managed to escape on their own, while rescue teams rushed to evacuate those trapped under the debris. Mayor Landge later confirmed that all individuals were rescued safely and no fatalities were reported.
Fire brigade personnel, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, police officials and representatives from health and environment departments participated in the rescue operation.
Authorities carried out a coordinated effort to clear debris and ensure the safe evacuation of the trapped workers. Officials remained at the site to monitor the situation and assess the structural damage.
The incident occurred amid continuous heavy rainfall across Maharashtra, particularly in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, where several areas have witnessed waterlogging, flooding and infrastructure-related problems.
More than 6,000 residents have reportedly been shifted from vulnerable areas, while educational institutions in parts of Pune remained closed after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for heavy rainfall.
The collapse adds to a series of monsoon-related incidents in Maharashtra. Earlier, a three-storey residential building collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area during heavy rain, resulting in the deaths of six people, including five children.
With rainfall continuing across the state, authorities have increased monitoring and preparedness measures in vulnerable locations to prevent further accidents and ensure timely emergency response.
