Bengaluru: The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday launched searches at around 18 premises linked to Karnataka PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, his daughter and Congress MP Priyanka Jarkiholi and others. The action has put the Jarkiholi family under the spotlight amid a probe into alleged bar licence irregularities, financial transactions and suspected money laundering.

The pre-dawn operation across Karnataka and Maharashtra has emerged as a major political and investigative development in Karnataka, with ED teams examining properties, documents and financial records linked to the minister and people associated with him.

ED Raids Satish Jarkiholi-Linked Premises

ED officials began the searches early Wednesday morning, with Central paramilitary personnel deployed alongside the investigating teams. Movement in and out of the premises was restricted while the searches were underway.

The operation covers more than 15 locations, with officials putting the total number of premises under search at around 18. Locations in Bengaluru, Belagavi and Gokak are among those being examined, along with properties and premises connected to people associated with the Jarkiholi family.

Satish Jarkiholi’s residence in Bengaluru’s Dollars Colony is among the locations under scrutiny. Premises linked to his daughter Priyanka Jarkiholi, the Congress MP from Chikkodi, are also reported to have been searched. There was no immediate clarity on whether Satish Jarkiholi was present at any of the locations during the ED operation.

Why Is the ED Conducting These Searches?

The searches are part of an investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the issuance of bar licences. Investigators are examining allegations involving the approval of multiple licences, possible misuse of influence and suspected movement of illicit funds.

The ED is also examining the financial trail to determine whether money allegedly generated through irregularities was transferred, concealed or routed through channels that could attract provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The agency has registered a case against Satish Jarkiholi as part of the fresh investigation. At this stage, the allegations remain under investigation and the ED searches do not by themselves establish criminal liability.

Manjunath and Other Associates Also Under Scanner

The ED operation also extended to the residence of Y Manjunath, an Additional Commissioner of Excise and Satish Jarkiholi’s brother-in-law. Another location linked to Girish Sonwalkar, described as a close associate of the minister, was also searched.

The involvement of an Excise Department official is significant because the broader allegations concern the licensing of establishments selling liquor. Investigators are examining whether officials, intermediaries and private individuals played any role in the alleged licence-related transactions.

Fresh Case or Earlier Excise Probe?

One of the key developments in Wednesday’s operation is the ED’s clarification that the searches constitute a fresh investigation and are not directly linked to the earlier case involving Y Manjunath.

The earlier investigation followed a Lokayukta Police FIR concerning alleged corruption involving Excise Department officials. The ED had subsequently examined the possible money-laundering angle arising from those allegations.

The earlier probe involved allegations that liquor licences were obtained in violation of prescribed rules and that illegal payments were generated through the process. The latest investigation has added a new layer to the scrutiny surrounding the Jarkiholi family.

What Is the ED Looking For?

During searches of this nature, investigators typically examine documents, financial records, property-related papers, electronic devices and transaction details that may help establish a suspected money trail.

In this case, the agency is examining the alleged financial transactions connected to bar licences and whether funds linked to the alleged irregularities were subsequently diverted or transferred outside India.

Earlier reports connected the wider investigation with suspected foreign-linked funds. Investigators are expected to establish the source, movement and beneficiaries of any suspicious transactions identified during the probe.

The ED's findings from the searches could determine the next stage of the investigation, including further questioning, summons, attachment proceedings or other action under the PMLA, depending on the evidence recovered.

Satish Jarkiholi's Previous Excise Department Role

The latest ED action has also drawn attention because Satish Jarkiholi previously served as Karnataka’s Excise Minister between 2013 and 2016. His past association with the Excise Department has added political significance to the current investigation, although the present ED probe concerns allegations that remain subject to investigation and due legal process.

Jarkiholi had earlier questioned the need for the ED action against his brother-in-law and indicated that the corruption allegations could have been examined by the Lokayukta. He had not, however, directly described the ED action as politically motivated.

Priyanka Jarkiholi Also Reportedly Under Scanner

Priyanka Jarkiholi, Satish Jarkiholi’s daughter and Congress MP from Chikkodi, has also emerged in reports about Wednesday’s searches. Officials have said premises linked to her are among those being covered. However, details about the exact nature of the premises searched and the evidence being examined were not immediately available.

The development is significant because the ED operation now involves multiple members of the Jarkiholi family as well as people associated with the minister.

Karnataka Politics Could Feel the Impact

The searches come at a politically sensitive time in Karnataka and are likely to trigger a fresh political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the Opposition. For the ED, the central question will be whether the investigation can establish a clear link between the alleged licensing irregularities and any proceeds of crime.

For the Jarkiholi family, the immediate focus will be on the outcome of the searches and whether the agency takes further action based on documents or financial evidence recovered during the operation. The political impact could intensify if the investigation results in additional summons, arrests, property attachment or the filing of a prosecution complaint. For now, the investigation remains ongoing.

The ED is expected to analyse the material collected during the searches and trace the financial transactions under investigation. Investigators may also question individuals connected to the alleged licence approvals and financial network.

Any further action will depend on the evidence gathered during the searches and the agency’s assessment of the alleged money trail. More details are expected as the searches conclude and the ED provides additional information about the case.
