New Delhi: The Central government on Friday notified the appointment of five permanent judges to the Madras High Court and 15 additional judges to the High Courts of Madras, Calcutta, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.

The latest judicial appointments are aimed at improving the judicial strength of the High Courts and addressing vacancies that impact the timely disposal of cases. The appointments were made as part of the ongoing process to strengthen the higher judiciary and ensure the smooth functioning of constitutional courts.

Madras High Court Gets 5 New Judges and 10 Additional Judges

Five judicial officers were appointed as judges of the Madras High Court. The newly appointed judges include Justices Govindarajan Krishnaswamy, Rajnish Pathiyil, Ramesh Natarajan, GK Muthukumaar and Ramakrishnan Rajesh Vivekananthan.

In addition, 10 judicial officers have been appointed as additional judges of the Madras High Court. The list includes Justices Raveekumar Sankaranarayanan, Dilip Kumar Nagarajan, Ellappan Manoharan, Dr P Murugan, Justice MD Sumathi, S Alli, Justice C Thirumagal, Shanmugam Karthikeyan, Murugesan Baluchamy and Justice N Gunasekaran.

The appointment of additional judges is generally made to manage the increasing workload of High Courts and such judges may later be considered for permanent appointment subject to constitutional provisions and performance evaluation.

Eight Additional Judges Appointed to Calcutta High Court, 6 to Karnataka High Court

The Calcutta High Court has received eight new additional judges. The newly appointed judges include Justices Aryak Dutt, Atarup Banerjee, Sandip Kumar De, Partha Pratim Roy, Sudip Deb, Anuj Singh, Arjun Ray Mukherjee and Rishad Medora.

The appointments are expected to enhance the court’s capacity to handle pending litigation and improve judicial efficiency in the state.

The Central government also appointed six additional judges to the Karnataka High Court. The newly appointed judges include Justices Raghavendra Seetharam Srivatsa, Hema Kulkarni, Subramanya Rangarao, Vivekananda Thadagavadi Prakash, Pramod Bakkeswara and Shanthi Bhushan Hombe Gowda.

The appointments are expected to provide additional judicial manpower to deal with civil, criminal, constitutional and commercial matters before the Karnataka High Court.

In addition to the above appointments, Justice Amit Lahoti has been appointed as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The appointment comes amid efforts to fill judicial vacancies and strengthen the functioning of High Courts across the country. Adequate judicial strength remains crucial for reducing case pendency, improving access to justice and ensuring timely adjudication of legal disputes. The newly appointed judges are expected to assume their responsibilities after completing the required formalities under the constitutional framework governing appointments to the higher judiciary.
