Several recent tragedies have exposed gaps in enforcement, with investigations pointing to unauthorised construction and failures by civic authorities.

Recent Building Collapses In Delhi

National Capital has witnessed several deadly building collapses in recent months. These incidents have claimed lives and raised questions about the enforcement of construction regulations.

Harsh Vihar

A 60-year-old man, Chanderpal, and his 33-year-old son, Vijay Kumar, died after an under-construction building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Harsh Vihar on October 25. Their bodies were recovered during an overnight rescue operation.

Seemapuri

Four people, including a 21-year-old pregnant woman, died after a 25-year-old building collapsed in Seemapuri on October 7. Demolition work was underway around the five-storey structure when it gave way.

A case was registered against the building owner, Md Anwar, who was not present at the time. A magisterial inquiry into the incident was ordered.

An initial inquiry by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) found that the building had developed visible cracks following an earthquake in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli region the night before.

Satya Niketan

On September 6, a five-storey building housing a boys’ paying guest accommodation, Hostel Daze, collapsed in Satya Niketan near Delhi University’s South Campus.

Seven people, including five students and two workers, died in the incident. Repair work was underway in the basement when the structure collapsed.
