New Delhi: Delhi Police has placed Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke under preventive arrest over apprehensions of a breach of peace, while All India Students' Association (AISA) president Neha Bora has been released from custody following her detention ahead of a proposed protest march in the national capital.

The police action came on Friday, ahead of the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ march planned in Connaught Place. The demonstration was organised amid the ongoing agitation demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

According to reports, Dipke was detained in connection with proceedings under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which deal with security for keeping the peace and preventive arrest to avert the commission of cognisable offences.

Dipke to Be Produced Before Special Executive Magistrate

Dipke is expected to be produced before a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) for further proceedings. The action follows renewed protests by CJP members and their supporters against the Chief Election Commissioner.

The CJP has alleged that Dipke's whereabouts remained unknown for several hours after he was taken into custody, raising concerns among party members and his legal team regarding access to him.

Neha Bora Released After Detention

Bora, who was detained during the police action ahead of the proposed march, was released after the requisite formalities were completed under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act.

Her detention had drawn criticism from opposition leaders and student organisations, who called for the release of those taken into custody during the protest-related action.

Protest Against Chief Election Commissioner

The proposed march was part of the continuing agitation against Gyanesh Kumar, with demonstrators seeking his resignation over alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision exercise. The allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls have been contested amid a wider political debate over the exercise.

The latest detentions come against the backdrop of heightened security arrangements in central Delhi and a series of confrontations between protesters and law enforcement authorities over demonstrations in the capital. The legal proceedings against Dipke are expected to determine the course of action following his preventive arrest.
