Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday inaugurated development works worth around Rs26 crore and laid foundation stones for five projects in the Beerwah Assembly constituency, promising to address long-standing public infrastructure needs.

Abdullah said the government was working to improve local infrastructure, including bridges, electricity distribution, drainage, town beautification and sports facilities. He expressed confidence that the projects, being taken up in coordination with local MLA Dr Shafi, would help meet residents’ long-pending demands.

‘I Remain Indebted To Beerwah Voters’

Addressing a gathering in Beerwah, Abdullah said the constituency held a special place in his heart, recalling the support he received from voters during the 2014 Assembly elections.

“I have never forgotten the favour the voters of Beerwah did to me in the 2014 elections. I had told the people that I would remain indebted to them throughout my life and would continue working to repay that debt,” he said.

The chief minister added that he and his colleagues had worked over the past two years to accelerate development in the constituency in coordination with its elected representative, Dr Shafi.

Reconstructed Bridge, Riverfront Development Planned

Abdullah said a bridge near Beerwah town, which had collapsed over a stream, had been rebuilt and opened to the public. He thanked the deputy chief minister and the concerned department for completing the work, describing it as a key demand of local residents.

The government also plans to improve the area around the bridge by developing a walking track and decks along the riverbanks. The proposed facilities are expected to enhance the surroundings and provide residents with additional public spaces.

Abdullah said Rs4 crore had been earmarked for landscaping, drainage improvements and the beautification of Beerwah town.

New Receiving Station To Be Ready In Four To Five Months

Addressing concerns over electricity supply, Abdullah said the foundation stone had been laid for a new receiving station to overcome capacity constraints and replace ageing infrastructure at the existing facility.

He said the new station was expected to become operational within four to five months. The upgrade is aimed at strengthening the local power network and easing electricity-related problems, particularly during peak demand.

The chief minister also highlighted plans to establish a local workshop to repair distribution transformers. Until now, transformers damaged during winter had to be sent outside the area for repairs, leading to delays and inconvenience.

Abdullah said the concerned department had accepted the proposal put forward by MLA Dr Shafi, adding that work on the foundation of the repair workshop was already underway. The facility is expected to speed up repairs and improve the maintenance of the local electricity network.

Abdullah Backs Demand For Stadium

The chief minister also supported the demand for a stadium in Beerwah, saying the project would be given priority. A site has already been identified, he added.

“I have no objection to it. I myself believe that there should be a stadium,” he said.

The proposed stadium could provide local youngsters with better opportunities to participate in sports, pursue fitness activities and organise sporting events.

Focus On Timely Completion Of Projects

Abdullah reiterated that the government was working to ensure development projects across Jammu and Kashmir progressed without unnecessary delays.

The works inaugurated or announced in Beerwah cover a range of civic needs, including road connectivity, electricity supply, drainage, urban improvement and sports infrastructure.

The chief minister’s visit also underlined the importance of coordination between the government, departments and the local MLA to address residents’ concerns. The impact of the announcements will depend on the timely completion of projects, particularly the new receiving station and transformer repair workshop.
