Congress faces a major setback in Assam as senior leader and MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigns just weeks before the assembly elections. His exit, reportedly linked to ticket distribution disputes, has intensified internal tensions within the party.

Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi Resigns Ahead of Assembly Polls
Dispur: Just 20 days before the Assam Assembly elections, the Congress party has suffered a major political setback. Senior party leader and two-time Lok Sabha MP from Nagaon, Pradyut Bordoloi, has resigned from the primary membership and all posts of the Congress. He sent his resignation to AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, sparking a stir in political circles.
Bordoloi's resignation comes at a time when his son, Pratik, is the Congress candidate from the Margherita constituency. His fate will be decided in the April 9th election. Bordoloi's move has raised questions about the party's internal situation and strategy.
Although Bordoloi wrote only one line in his resignation letter -"With deep regret, I resign from the Congress"-sources indicate that dissatisfaction with ticket distribution is a major reason. It is reported that he had previously warned that if the current MLA from Lahorighat, Asif Mohammad Nazar, was re-nominated, he would leave the party.
Bordoloi alleged that Emdadul Islam, a close associate of Nazar, attacked him and other leaders in 2025, against whom the police have filed a charge sheet. He also claimed that state president Gaurav Gogoi had met with Islam, further fueling his anger.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has extended an open invitation to Bordoloi to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. He stated that the BJP would not only welcome him but also give him the opportunity to contest from a reserved seat. This statement has further fueled political speculation.
Bordoloi's resignation comes at a time when the Congress party is experiencing continuous splits. Recently, former state president Bhupen Kumar Bora also left the party. Senior leader Navjyoti Talukdar has also resigned, upset over not receiving a ticket.
Currently, the Congress leadership is busy trying to persuade Bordoloi. State President Gaurav Gogoi and AICC in-charge Jitendra Singh are meeting with him in Delhi. It remains to be seen whether this effort will be successful or whether the Congress will face another major setback before the elections.
