New Delhi: The death toll in the Satya Niketan building collapse has increased to six after rescue teams recovered another body from the debris on Monday. A five-storey building, reportedly being used as a students’ paying guest accommodation, collapsed on Sunday afternoon in Delhi’s South-West district.
Several people were trapped under the rubble after the structure suddenly came crashing down. Rescue teams from NDRF, Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, MCD, Civil Defence and other agencies are continuing search operations at the site.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reached the spot and reviewed the ongoing rescue efforts. She said multiple agencies were working together on a “war footing” to locate and rescue those trapped under the debris.

The adjacent building has also been vacated as a precautionary measure. The Chief Minister said the situation was being closely monitored and all possible assistance was being provided to affected families.
Eyewitnesses described panic and chaos after the collapse. A local resident said the sound was similar to an earthquake, followed by a cloud of dust and debris across the area.
People nearby claimed that cries for help could be heard from under the collapsed structure, prompting locals to rush towards the site before rescue teams arrived.
Several people have been rescued from the rubble and shifted to hospitals. Some injured victims were taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where doctors provided emergency treatment.
Officials said rescue operations remain challenging due to the narrow lanes around the collapse site, making it difficult to bring heavy equipment close to the building.
The incident has triggered political reactions, with opposition leaders questioning safety standards in student accommodations and demanding accountability.
CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke raised concerns over the condition of educational infrastructure, while AAP leaders Saurabh Bhardwaj and Atishi demanded a detailed investigation into possible negligence.
BJP leaders defended the government’s response, highlighting the ongoing rescue operations. BJP MLA Kailash Gehlot and Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said multiple agencies were working continuously at the accident site.
The exact reason behind the collapse is yet to be confirmed. Initial information suggests that construction or repair work was underway in the basement before the incident.
Delhi Police have started investigating the circumstances behind the collapse, while authorities are examining possible safety violations and structural issues.
