New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heatwave conditions in Delhi, with temperatures expected to range between 41°C and 44°C over the next few days. A yellow alert has been issued, indicating rising heat levels and the need for precautionary measures.

In response, the Government of NCT of Delhi has released detailed guidelines for schools to ensure student safety.

Revised Guidelines for Schools

The Directorate of Education has instructed all government, aided, and private schools to limit exposure to extreme heat. Outdoor assemblies are to be shortened or conducted indoors, while open-air classes have been discouraged.

Schools have also been advised to suspend or reduce outdoor physical activities during peak heat hours.

Focus on Hydration and Awareness

A key initiative introduced is the “Water Bell” system, which reminds students to drink water at regular intervals of 45 to 60 minutes. This step aims to prevent dehydration among children.

Additionally, schools must display awareness material on heatwave precautions and conduct short sessions to educate students about symptoms of heat-related illnesses and preventive measures.

Monitoring and Safety Measures

Authorities have recommended a buddy system, encouraging students to look out for one another during school hours. Each institution is also required to appoint a nodal officer to oversee the implementation of safety measures, including hydration reminders and awareness drives.

Teachers have been directed to regularly share weather advisories with parents to keep them informed about daily conditions.

Recognising Heat-Related Illnesses

Officials have highlighted common symptoms of heat stress, including dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, confusion, and unusually high body temperature. Early identification is critical to prevent complications.
